Week 8- March (6 pts.)
In this graphic novel, the artist used a black and white watercolor-like style. Its mostly realistic, with some exaggerations used for emotion and impact. He used light gray washes to create the different skin tones for the people of color. The artist used details in the facial features to represent the visual aspects of real people. In the beginning, when the march was happening, most of the police officers were almost faceless. I feel this was to make them appear more intimidating as they terrorize the peaceful marchers. The perspective was done in a way to make them look threatening adding to the feeling of hopelessness. One powerful exaggerated image shows the police dragging a protestor away. He has a terrified expression and is scraping at the floor, only showing the creepy shadow of the officer.
Another interesting part was learning about John Lewis and him growing up on a farm. He seemed to have a content peaceful life. He cared for his chickens like they were his own children. The artist does a great job at showing the innocence and the harsh reality of growing up on a farm. Sadly, his life changed when his uncle took him up North and opened his eyes up to racism. The artist drew different scenes of the giant buildings in Ohio to show the difference in scenery and scale from the farm. One small detail I like is how in the beginning (2009), it shows John Lewis as a very content older man, because he's about to attend the inauguration of president Obama.
