Week 9- Moebius & Jodorowsky ( 7 pts.)

With titles like this, I wasn't sure what I was getting into, but that's part of the experience. This is a French series of graphic novels set in a dystopian future. There are humans, aliens and robots. This is a typical hero's quest story, but the protagonist is more of an anti-hero. Difool is a private investigator and he doesn't want to be a hero, but he still has a good side in him that makes him stay involved. One of the best characters is his sidekick Deepo. He's a loyal, likable friend who gets Difool out of trouble many times. The setting was super intriguing and really stood out to me from the moment it was introduced. The city looked very futuristic, with many of its structures and roads being incredibly detailed and suspended high into the sky, with a lake of acid at the bottom. I noticed a strange contrast between the clothing of the people and the setting. Difool and other citizens wear clothes that resemble 18th century attire, and other characters dress like spacemen that fit better with the environment. With its spaceships and strange animal-like creatures, to even the designs of its ginormous buildings, I was heavily reminded of Star Wars.

The quest is about finding the Incal, a crystal of infinite power. Like most stories, if the bad guys get it, it means the end of the universe. Its a classic Mcguffin retrieval story. Of course, there are several groups after the crystal, so Difool and Deepo must use their street-smart skills to fool their opponents on order to save the universe. I liked the humor and the relationship between the Difool and Deepo, though some parts got a tad graphic for my taste.
